Why We Built This

MealMutt started with a simple question: why is it so hard to cook for your dog? Commercial dog food labels are confusing, ingredient lists are opaque, and most homemade feeding guides online are either dangerously oversimplified or locked behind expensive consultations.

We wanted a free tool that any dog owner could use to calculate exactly what their dog needs — based on real nutritional science, not guesswork — and cook it at home with ingredients from the grocery store.

How It Works

MealMutt calculates your dog's daily calorie and macronutrient needs using established veterinary formulas based on weight, age, breed size, and activity level. Each recipe is portioned to your dog's profile and checked against AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles (2023 edition) using live ingredient data from the USDA FoodData Central database.

We currently check 5 key nutrients — protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin A — against AAFCO minimums for your dog's life stage. This covers critical nutritional baselines, though it's not a complete panel of all 37+ AAFCO nutrients. For that level of precision, consult a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

What We're Not

MealMutt is not a substitute for veterinary advice. We're a cooking tool, not a vet clinic. Our recipes are designed to be nutritionally reasonable starting points — not prescriptions. If your dog has health conditions, allergies, or special dietary needs, always work with your veterinarian before changing their diet.

  • Real data, not guesses. Every nutritional value comes from USDA FoodData Central, fetched live — not from a static table we made up.
  • Transparent compliance. We show you exactly which nutrients pass or fall below AAFCO minimums, with actual numbers — not just a green checkmark.
  • No hidden agendas. Our affiliate links (for supplements) are clearly disclosed. We never recommend products we haven't researched.
